WA Legal issues to gain National Focus

Legal issues in Western Australia will gain a national focus from this week, when the “Law Matters” radio program broadcasts for the very first time through the National Indigenous Radio Service (NIRS).

Produced and presented by the Aboriginal Legal Service of WA (ALSWA), this fortnightly program focuses upon human rights and some of the key issues facing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples within the justice system.

Since commencing back in 2010, ALSWA has welcomed the opportunity to broadcast “Law Matters” on 6NME Noongar Radio 100.9 FM in Perth, but from tomorrow, July the 1st, audiences can also tune in through NIRS (more information at www.nirs.org.au).

ALSWA CEO Dennis Eggington is thrilled that “Law Matters” will now have a broader reach. “Each program provides the opportunity for ALSWA to chat with some of the key stakeholders within the justice system, highlight legal issues of importance to our people, promote human rights and profile the services that our own and other organisations provide. It is a dynamic program which we are extremely proud of and we look forward to our continued programs on Noongar Radio which I’m sure will be of great interest to a national audience. We’re very happy to have this opportunity through NIRS.”

Hosted by ALSWA’s Jodi Hoffmann, a Nunga woman, “Law Matters” invites and welcomes new listeners to tune in and find out more about the law in Western Australia, the issues surrounding the over-representation of our people within WA’s justice system and the many people who are striving for justice to contribute to a fairer and more equitable justice system for all.
