ALSWA Submission to the Commonwealth Standing Committee on Legal and Constitutional Affairs – July 2009

This submission focuses on the access of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in WA to legal representation and justice. This access is limited by the lack of a State-wide interpreter service and limited availability of civil and family lawyers in remote areas. The submission discusses the gross inadequacy of funding for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander legal services, alternate means of delivering justice such as Aboriginal Community Court models and the need to consider expanding the range of legal service providers available to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women.
