MEDIA STATEMENT BY THE ABORIGINAL LEGAL SERVICE OF WA, 23 January 2009

johnbedfordThe Aboriginal Legal Service of WA (ALSWA) has come out in support of a State Opposition initiative that would see young people placed on a 30 day sea voyage program aboard the Leeuwin.

“Our prisons are over-crowded and the incarceration rate of our people continues to rise, so it is clear that the current system is failing our young people.

We must be looking at alternative solutions, and programs such as this play an important role in teaching our young people life skills and team work.

They also provide the opportunity to build positive peer relationships and avoid the lifelong legacy of institutionalisation.

ALSWA supports this initiative and any program that is committed to working towards breaking the cycle of re-offending and providing a better future for our children.
