More than two years after the tragic death of respected Elder Mr. Ward, his widow and sons have still not received any offer of ex-gratia compensation or support from the state government.

The Aboriginal Legal Service of WA (ALSWA) says it is a disgrace that this matter has not been given greater priority and it must now be addressed immediately, as a matter of urgency.

ALSWA is seeking an ex-gratia payment on behalf of the family in light of the Coroner’s findings following the death of Mr. Ward on 27 January 2008.

“Despite ALSWA’s ongoing efforts, the government has still not addressed the issue of compensation” said John Bedford, ALSWA Executive Officer and Acting CEO.

“It’s disgraceful that so long after this avoidable tragedy, there has been absolutely no assistance offered to this family, counselling or otherwise. After two years, we expect answers and action and that has not been forthcoming. It’s time for the state government to stop blaming others for their own lack of action in this matter” said Mr. Bedford.
