WA’s Chief Justice will join Aboriginal Legal Service of WA (ALSWA) CEO Dennis Eggington tomorrow when the 100th Law Matters program goes to air.
Produced and presented by ALSWA, the fortnightly radio program commenced in 2010 on 100.9 FM Noongar Radio in Perth, and is now heard not only locally, but throughout the country on the National Indigenous Radio Service (NIRS).
In a State where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples comprise almost 40% of the adult prisoner population Law Matters provides a unique insight into the struggles faced by some of WA’s most disadvantaged.
What makes this legal program unique in WA is that it is presented from an Aboriginal perspective and focuses upon the complex legal issues faced by local community members, who are seventeen times more likely to be imprisoned than their non-Indigenous counterparts.
Since its inception six years ago, Law Matters has provided a much needed platform for candid discussion with key stakeholders about the over-representation of Aboriginal people within the justice system, whilst providing a greater insight into law, Culture and Country. “Law Matters ensures that we have a strong voice to speak out about the situation facing our people in WA and how our own service plays such an important role within this state’s justice system” said Dennis Eggington. We don’t just focus on the negative either, we bring to light the wonderful work that takes place in many communities where our people are working holistically to ensure that there is a stronger future for our people. These are such important stories to highlight that are often overlooked”.
Law Matters, produced and presented by Nunga woman Jodi Hoffmann, ALSWA’s Media Officer, will broadcast tomorrow (Wednesday 22 June) from 11.00 am to 12.00 noon, on Perth’s 100.9 FM Noongar Radio, with Guests Dennis Eggington, The Hon Wayne Martin and Debbie Kilroy, former prisoner, and Founder of Sisters Inside.
